Matcha Tea Bowl Workshop: Wheel Throwing

The matcha bowl, used in Japanese tea ceremonies is a simple form, yet there are key features to consider when making one. Start with a presentation of how to make Matcha tea for inspiration. A variety of examples of handmade bowls will be provided to help gain an understanding of the design for both aesthetics & functionality. Next, enjoy a throwing demonstration on the wheel while you’re guided through the process of creating a matcha bowl. Learn about the various elements that go into making one, while considering how these design elements may enhance the experience of using the bowl. Shape, size, width and weight of the bowl will be covered as you learn about both spiritual significance and functional aspects of this form. Next, you’ll create your own unique matcha bowl! Finishing steps (to be done after the workshop) such as trimming and glazing techniques will be discussed.
Adults, Teens 16+, Advanced Beginner/Intermediate-should be able to center clay on the wheel consistently. Each participant will be able to keep 1-2 pieces and have access to open studio hours for trimming and glazing*
