Botanical Dyeing: Madder Root
Discover the rich and vibrant colors of the Madder plant in this fiber arts class. Create natural dye for textiles by extracting natural pigment from madder roots, which produce a stunning spectrum of color tones ranging from yellow to reddish orange to purple, and brown.
Originating in India, this dyeing process spread throughout the world and dates back thousands of years to the ancient civilizations of the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. Experiment with the properties and characteristics of the dye bath to explore its color fastness, pH sensitivity and lightfastness & fading. Next, try out dyeing a variety of natural fabrics such as silk, muslin and cotton to discover how each fabric takes the dye. There will be some time for a few Shibori resist techniques as well for more creative dyeing possibilities. Capture the beauty and colors found in nature while exploring age-old textile dyeing methods. All levels/materials included. Adults & Teens 15+
